The Yubikey FIDO U2F NFC

The Yubico FIDO U2F NFC Security Key sets the standard for digital access protection for individuals and businesses. Designed to offer maximum security while remaining incredibly easy to use, it combines modern authentication protocols FIDO2 and U2F.

Technical Specifications for the FIDO U2F NFC

Interface

The key uses a USB-A interface (USB 2.0-compatible) and an NFC (Near Field Communication) interface for contactless authentication on mobile devices. All of the key's security features work through both of these channels.

FIDO U2F NFC Protocol

The U2F (Universal 2nd Factor) app can generate and store an unlimited number of credentials. It is certified by the FIDO Alliance and functions as an ultra-secure second factor of authentication (2FA).

FIDO 2

The FIDO 2 app provides secure single and multi-factor authentication and can store 25 sets of credentials.
These credentials, which are protected by a PIN, enable password-less authentication.
The Yubikey, unlocked by entering its PIN and pressing it manually, allows you to log in to your accounts without entering a username or password. The FIDO 2 app is FIDO-certified.

Supports single-factor authentication, multi-factor authentication (2FA), or completelypasswordless authentication.

    • Storage capacity: You can store up to 100 resident keys (Passkeys/discoverable identifiers) for FIDO2.

    • Enhanced security: Your login credentials are protected by a local PIN that you set yourself.

    • Authentication process: Once unlocked with your PIN and a manual press on its sensor, the key instantly logs you into your accounts without requiring you to enter your username or password. The FIDO2 app is certified by the FIDO Alliance.

  • Cryptography: Support for ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) p256 algorithms.

Physical specifications

  • Form factor: Reinforced "Ticket" format key, ultra-durable.

  • Connector: USB-A.

  • Dimensions: 18 mm x 45 mm x 3.35 mm.

  • Weight: 3.6 g.

  • Waterproofing: Water- and crush-resistant (one-piece design made of reinforced plastic and fiberglass, with no battery or moving parts).

  • Temperature ranges:

    • Operating temperature: 0 °C to 40 °C

    • Storage: -20 °C to 85 °C

Functionality & User Experience

The key lies in physically verifying your presence to completely prevent phishing attacks.

  1. Insertion/Proximity: Insert the key into your USB-A port or hold it near your smartphone's NFC reader.

  2. PIN (Optional / FIDO2): If the service requires it (passwordless mode), enter your local PIN.

  3. Confirmation gesture: An LED flashes on the key. You lightly touch the gold-colored metal sensor. This purely physical gesture proves that you are indeed behind the screen and prevents any remote activation by a hacker or malware.

System and Application Compatibility

  • Web browsers: Native compatibility with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari, and Brave (via the WebAuthn API).
